I expected big walking days but I hadn’t predicted to be overwhelmed by the visible remains of Albania’s 40 year communist history. A new 8 day adventure which takes you trekking through the highest mountains in Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo. In September 2017, I was extremely excited to be joining KE’s High Peaks of the Balkans trip. However many of my generation did not learn that there was once, as recent as 30 years ago, a country in Europe which was as secretive and closed as North Korea is now. These are well known dates that Millenials (oh I hate that term) like me were taught in school. I was born in June 1989, the year the Berlin Wall came down and the Iron Curtain creaked open over Eastern Europe. This photo essay focuses on one of the schools the Circuit trek passes through (green circle, left).Ī permit fee of $500 USD per person for 10 days (included in KE’s price) limits the trekkers to protect the Upper Dolpo region, which also benefits all the people and school kids in the surrounding villages. And what one can learn from the experience is thought provoking. What one can see from this Circuit trek around the region is just breathtaking (see photos posted on KE’s website). The most remote upstream of Karnali River – the longest of Nepal, cuts through the foot of Tibetan Hills in Saldang and nearby villages. Most villages, monasteries and the ways of life remain largely untouched by the modem civilization. Remote, mysterious, cold, dusty, windy, and with high mountain passes as barriers to entry, it remains one of the least visited regions in Nepal. ![]()
